  정성진은 『마르크스와 트로츠키』에서 마르크스가 남긴 ‘고전적 마르크스주의’를 사이비 마르크스주의자들에 대한 비판을 통해 옹호하고 있다. 소련사회의 역사와 스탈린주의 및 사회주의, 논리역사주의와 가치로부터 생산가격으로 역사적 전형, 신리카도주의, 레닌주의, 트로츠키주의, 한국사회구성체논쟁 등에 대한 정성진의 비판과 새로운 해석은 마르크스경제학에 대한 그의 깊은 연구의 결과이며, “정성진은 트로츠키주의자”라는 어설픈 비판은 결코 이 책의 높은 연구업적을 훼손시킬 수 없다.

  Marx and Trotsky was written by Seongjin Jeong who intended to protect the rational kernel of Marxian economics. The book includes his criticisms on and new interpretations of: historical development of Soviet Russia and Stalinism and "classical Marxian" socialism; logical-historical interpretation of Capital and historical transformation of value into price of production; neo-Ricardianism, Leninism, Trotskyism, and controversies on Korean social formation. These studies reveal not only Jeong"s ardent admiration of Marx and Trotsky but also his hostility against revisionists and post-modern Marxists. Such a common superficial critique as "Professor Jeong is a Trotskyist" can not damage this wonderful academic achievement.
