Development of a learning material based on the communicative functions using English stories in elementary school

  The purpose of this study was to develop a learning material using English stories based on the communicative functions of English textbooks in elementary school. The English textbooks of the fifth and sixth grade and those of other countries such as USA and Singapore were examined to know how well stories were applied and used. To achieve the purpose of the study, more than fifty English stories were selected and modified to follow the suggested communicative functions in English textbooks. The evaluation was achieved for the effectiveness of the materials by giving the questionnaire to 39 adults including elementary school teachers, parents, English instructors and undergraduate students. The evaluation showed the story-based materials developed in this study was positive in teaching and learning English. The results of this study can be summarized as follows: First, stories are useful as English learning materials in elementary English education. Second, stories can be modified and the restructured stories are effective supplementary materials for elementary school students. Suggestions for more effective English education are presented based on the results of the study.
