The Semantic Constraints of Adjectival Resultative Predicates

One remarkable aspect of resultative constructions is that they are found even with verbs which normally do not take direct objects. Thus, while the verb "hammer" can appear in the simple transitive frame independently of the result phrase, neither "dance" nor "run" can take a direct object alone. The fake reflexive allows a resultative to be indirectly predicated of a non-theme subject via a direct object argument. The culmination of an accomplishment is determined by what happens to its theme. Thus, the argument of the culmination event is the incremental theme of the matrix verb. It is argued that the result aspect of the resultatives derives from the causal relation, and when it is absent the result meaning in resultatives is absent, too.
