A substantial body of research has investigated how focus-on-form instructions have contributed to L2 language learning in recent years, but there has been little research to investigate the degree of students’ attention to the target forms during the instructions and further to examine their performances in real contexts using the target forms. This study addresses the degree of students’ attention to English conditional sentences during the instruction and investigates students’ real communications through on-line Internet-relay chat after the instruction. The findings showed that the students, especially at high-level, in the output-based instruction paid better attention to the instructed linguistic forms than those in the input-based one did. In addition, the students in the output-based instruction produced more and better target linguistic forms than those in the input-based one in the on-line Internet Relay Chatting, which seemed to support the advantage of the output-based instruction in Korean university EFL contexts.
