On the criterion of connectedness in the English National Curriculum and the textbooks

  The purposes of this study are to define the criterion of connectedness, to analyse the connectedness of the national curriculum, and to present the directions of developing English textbooks. To achieve these purposes, the achievement targets of the revised national curriculum are reviewed, and the connectedness among the achievement targets is analysed. Based on the definition of the connectedness, the criteria of connectedness on the topics, achievement targets, communicative functions, language forms, and contents of the curriculum are presented. Particularly, the connectedness between primary and secondary school is considered. That is, in the primary school, teachers enable students to improve listening and speaking abilities through cards, chants, multi media, games, and so on. In order to continue the interest and the motivation of the primary school, the connectedness between primary school and secondary school needs to be checked in developing textbooks. Thus, in this paper, the direction of developing textbooks based on the criteria of the connectedness is presented.
