In 1999 I wrote an article to introduce the Hwanmongguagi(鰥夢寡記) to the academic world whose author is unknown. While I have been trying to know the author, my father, professor Kang(姜銓?), who had an extraordinary interest in collection of ancient books, gave me a clue to the author. He made clear that the author of the Hwanmongguagi is identical with the author of the Gimongheonjib(寄夢軒集) on two grounds:(ⅰ) the two books were bound together in one file when he bought them, and (ⅱ) the pen name of the author of the Gimongheonjib is identical with that of ‘Gimongheonjuin(寄夢軒主人)’ who is one of the characters in the Hwanmongguagi. In this article, I examined who is the author of the Hwanmongguagi with the help of my father"s findings.<BR> A close examination of the work made me to conclude that (i) the author was born in 1824 as a descendent of Gwanghui Choi (崔光輝) who was the then queen"s father, and the 8th generation of Geugseong Choi (崔克成) who was a meritorious retainer for his efforts during the 1592 Chosen-Japan War; (ii) he lived in poverty as a man of virtue in the country, and made terms with Seokbong Yun (尹錫鳳 1842-1910) who was a pupil of Junggyo Liu (柳重敎 1821-1893); (iii) according to the books, it seemed that he had been called several pen names-‘Gimongheonjuin’(寄夢軒主人), or ‘Unyeonchobu’(雲淵樵夫), or ‘Seorimchobu’(西林樵夫).<BR> The author wrote in the work that he had lived in Seongju (星州), Yeongnam for generations and moved to Seoju (西州), Chungnam which is presently Seocheon, Chungnam. The two books show his poor life, his endurance and regret of twenty years in Seoju. <BR> In short, though it is a mere copy of a manuscript with a poor compilation and the sentences don’t have much literary honor, the Gimongheonjib has a significance in respect that it shows the life and living conditions of the author, and giving a light in finding the author of the Hwanmongguagi.
