Wonsan-Do(island) has 3 Ris and 8 natural towns. The people living there have long been performing religious rituals like Dang-je(堂祭) or Poong-o-je(豊漁祭). The objects of worship in Dang-je are Mountain God, Sea God and Horse God. More specifically, those worshipped in Dang-je are Mountain God, Tiger(Jeo-du, Jum-mal) from the mountain god lineage and Grandma Dragon(Sun-chon, Jin-go-ji) from the water god lineage. In Jin-chon, Horse God is among the objects of worship. In addition, Street God is worshipped in Go-ri-je and Sea God and Bae-seo-nang(Ship God) are worshipped in Poong-o-je.
The ritual for Dang-je(堂祭) or Poong-o-je(豊漁祭) is performed in the following order:‘Jin-seol(陳設)→Boon-hyang(焚香)→Hun-ju-bae-rye(獻酒拜禮)→Dok-chook(讀祝)→So-ji(燒紙)-ol-lim’. Dok-chook has been removed since the 1970"s but it is still expressed orally by the ritual master or one of the participants. Things prayed for are the plentiful catch of fish, a rich harvest, community peace, and marital safety.
This study aims to examine the origins and characteristics of the objects of worship in Wonsan-do. Discussions of such were conducted on the following three:Horse God in Jin-chon, Grandma Dragon in Sun-chon and Jin-go-ji, and Mountain God in Jeo-du and Jum-mal. This study is meant to suggest that those community religions are a way of celebrating the new year and praying for blessings.
