This paper aims to survey the possible assets of various methodologies and strategies that can be introduced in teaching English poetry to Korean students at both college and graduate levels as part of teaching English literature in general. The introduction puts the issues of the defence of poetry―as related to the meaning of teaching English poetry―in the historical context of the 19th-and-20th century. As a preliminary discussion, I try to define "poetry" as compared to the characteristics of other genres of literature. Broadly, three main methodologies and strategies of teaching English poetry are suggested: teaching poetry as a source of teaching English as a foreign language; teaching poetry in the perspective of linguistics in its broad sense; teaching poetry in terms of various theories of literature and narrative. The conclusion emphasizes that whatever the approaching methods, the ultimate goal of teaching English poetry should be to enhance and cultivate the critical and creative literacy of the students to help them contribute themselves as future cultural elite for a betterment of Korean and global society as well. It is also suggested that Korean scholars need to cooperate to edit and publish textbooks and references for teaching and learning English poetry more effectively.
