It is proposed that the informational categories that have been traditionally referred to as topic, contrastive topic, and focus are defined in terms of twoinformational primitive features, {+-topical, +-focal}. Four possible informational categories, namely [+t, -f], [+t, +f], [-t, +f], and [-t,-f], are yielded from this binary feature system, which exhaustively categorize the informational status of each part of a sentence. An integrated analysis for the two categories, namely focus and focus frame that are defined as [-t, +f] and [-t, -f], respectively, is proposed, based on the semantic, syntactic, and discoursal considerations. This incorporates the semantic function of [+f] as the identificational predication and its corresponding syntactic structure interacting with the discourse context. The information conveyed by the category[-t, -f] is interpreted as having the widest scope among the four categories, which is accounted for by its anaphoric property licensed by the antecedent entailed in the previous context.
