Second language or foreign language speakers of English today outnumbers those for whom it is the mother tongue. It needs to adjust the methodologies in line with this changing pattern, in which the goal of learning is more often be able to use English as a lingua franca in communication with other ‘non-native speakers’, i.e. as an international language, than as a foreign language in communication with its ‘native speakers’. In pronunciation, probably more than in any other area of ELT, there is an urgent need for a completely new paradigm. In relation to the solution for pronunciation teaching in the 21st Century, radical change is required in four areas: firstly, pronunciation in teacher education; secondly, in the testing of pronunciation; thirdly, in the status of ‘NNS’ pronunciation teachers; and fourthly, in the need for EIL pronunciation learning for ‘NSs’. As far as spoken English is concerned, pronunciation is the common denominator. If EIL is the future of English, it will be so by virtue of its ability to reconcile the opposing forces of intelligibility and identity.
