The effects of TETE on Korean 4th graders" academic achievement and willingness for English study

  The effectiveness of Teaching English through English (TETE) in Korean primary English has been a controversial issue. The purpose of this study is to explore the effect of TETE in Korean elementary school. For this purpose, the English listening and speaking capabilities of the students, along with the interest and confidence in English study, were tested. 66 students of the 4th grade were selected, and they were divided into two groups. In one group called a comparison group, students were taught in Korean and English, and in the other group called an experimental group, they were taught mostly in English. The study had been carried for 8 months. The result shows that the students in the experimental group improved their listening capabilities better than those in the comparison group. Also, they showed more interest and confidence in English study than those in the comparison group. However, no significant difference in the improvement of speaking capabilities between the two groups were found. This study shows that the English teachers should have confidence in the effectiveness of TETE and adopt the methodology in their classes. In addition, to improve the students" English speaking skills, increasing the frequency of English classes is highly recommended.
