Yoon Dong-Joo was a Christian poet. But I think he was a Confucian Christian. In his poems, there are many poems which concerns with Confucianism. I suppose that he would think that Christianism and Confucianism is not a different religion. Because he wrought God"s will by means of Christian words at his poem on one occasion, and he did it by Confucian on another poem.
The mirror image of his poem symbolizes the human mind. The Confucianism represents human mind by mirror. To polish the mirror means to cultivate the mind in Confucianism. The well-polished mirror represents a good-natured person. The Confucian contemplation aims at improving the morality and human nature. He wanted to recover the human nature by contemplation.
In the age of imperial Japan the Eschatology and the Second Advent of Christ means that the imperialist Japan falls on an end and the system of present nation is evil. In Yoon Dong-Joo"s poems, there were a few poems which expresses the Eschatology. We can not find resistant content in his eschatological poem. But if we consider the situation of the ages that the eschatology was dangerous thought to the imperial Japan, we can see his eschatological poems as a ideological resistant poetry. He was dead in prison by reason of the independence movement. I think his Confucianism and Eschatology led him to the death in prison.
