Nobody deny that Muhammad `Abdu made enormous contribution to modern Islamic thought. Scholar, mufti, theologian, and reformer, he continues to be influential on many Egyptians and many Arabs as well. His thought was combination of the new and the old. Therefore his thought appeared at times controversial and vague.
His effort to make the Islamic heritage compatible with modern ideas eventually led to a division among both his disciples and his followers. His another concern was to find an alternative to the kind of stagnation that he himself experienced in the Egytian religious school, especially al-Azhar.
In many ways he tried to re-interpretate the holy Quran for the modern world. Impressed with the importance of the concept of utility in shaping the pragmatic approach of Europeans, he highlighted the Islamic ideal of al-maslaha al-`amma, public welfare, into a position of prominence.
Muhammad `Abdu died on 11 July 1905. Although `Abdu was attacked for his reformative views and his actions, the Egyptian society lost a great scholar and scholar.
