A text is a basic unit of linguistic communication. Translation is considered as an act of communication. R. Harweg, defined a text as a "connection of linguistic units that consist of pronouns". Mona Baker proposed in her book "In Other Words" that Arabic text makes considerable use of pronominal references which are not usually used in English text. Based on her opinion, this study examines examples which have reference device as a cohesive property in the process of Korean-Arabic translation so as to find out any effective translation strategies that particularly highlight the property in Arabic texts. Reference device can be classified by a reference at word level, extended reference, text reference at the levels of discourse and co-reference. Results of this research have been obtained through a pirate study. Not a pronoun but a recurrence is preferred in Korean texts. In the mean time, third person pronouns, instead of recurrences, are often used in the text examined in this paper. It is observed that word level references are frequently employed in the translation of Arabic texts. That is due to the characteristics of Arabic language using nominal suffix references as a portmanteau type morph. Co-reference relations are achieved through the use of reference, recurrence and paraphrasing in Korean source text. While in Translated Arabic text, recurrence, paraphrasing and ellipsis are used in addition to the real world knowledge to achieve co-reference relations. Translator as a mediator needs to reflect both linguistic features such as reference device and real-world knowledge of the society where the language is used.
