In the 1950"s, Muhammad Mussadiq as the Iranian prime minister is respected by most nationalistic and democratic Iranian people. He ended along period of British oil hegemony in Iran by nationalizing Anglo-Iranians Oil Company, or AIOC, giving Iranians strong national pride. The AIOC had been exploiting Iranian oil since the beginning of the century. Unfortunately however, the AIOC didn"t understand the nationalist spirit of postwar Iran.
At the start of the Mussadiq era the United States had a very positive image in Iran. U. S. and Iran have good relations, in which she supported Mussadiq government, mediating an agreement with the British. But U. S. support for Mussadiq declined, unlucky under the Eisenhower administration U. S. engineered a coup d"etat that collapsed Mussadiq nationalist regime, and backed despotic Shah regime. As a result U. S. image in the eyes of Iranian began to change from goodness to evil.
This paper examines U. S. - Iran relations during Mussadiq period. Especially it focus on the strategic change of U. S. policy toward Mussadiq regime in Iran, causing U. S. image from benevolent supporter to malevolent evil.
