사회화 개념의 역사적 전개에 관한 고찰 - 서양사상사를 중심으로

A Study on the Historical Development of Concept of Socialization -Focused on the History of Western Thoughts

&nbsp;&nbsp;사회화(社會化, Sozialisation)는 “개인이 그가 속한 사회의 규범과 가치를 내면화하여 정상적인 사회의 구성원이 되어 가는 과정”이다(교육학용어사전, 2000: 352). 물론 사회화의 과정은 개인발달의 과정과 별개의 과정으로 진행되는 것이 아니라, 두 과정은 상호보완하면서 진행된다. 사회화라는 개념은 1900년 경 프랑스의 사회학자 에밀 뒤르케임(Emil Durkheim)에 의해서 처음으로 사용되면서 여러 개별과학에서도 다루어지게 되었다. 특히 1920년대 미국에서의 사회화 연구는 이 개념의 내용을 풍부하게 하고, 이 개념을 정형화하는데 기여했다. 현재 이 개념은 인간과 사회의 상호관계를 연구하는 모든 개별과학에서 광범위하게 사용된다.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;그러나 사회화와 관련된 내용들은 서양사상사에 풍부하게 발견된다. 즉, 이 개념은 과학적 필요에 의해서 비교적 최근에 성립된 개념이지만, 이 개념의 전제와 내용은 이미 고대에서부터 언급되었고 발전되어 왔다. 이 글은 이러한 사회화 개념의 역사적 전개과정을 고찰함으로써 이 개념의 전제, 즉 개인으로서의 인간 및 인간의 변화에 영향을 미치는 실제적인 사회적 조건들에 대한 반성을 기초로하여 경험적인 사회화 연구 이후 많은 개별과학에서 다루어지는 이 개념의 교육학적 수용의 문제점을 제기하고자 한다.

&nbsp;&nbsp;Socialization, by definition, is "the process of being a normal member of a society to which he or she belongs by internalizing social norms and values". Needless to say, socialization process is not separated from but closely interrelated with individual development process. The concept of socialization, introduced first by Emil Durkheim around 1900, has been widely used in various fields of science. Especially, a series of inquiries on socialization by American scholars in 1920s contributed to content abundance and standardized defining of the meaning of socialization. This definition of socialization has been widely used in many individual sciences which conduct researches on mutual interaction between human and society by now.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;The quest for related topics on socialization, however, have much longer history in the western thoughts than that of conceptualized use of socialization for scientific purpose. Premises and contents of the concept have already been referred and developed from ancient time. This study raises several questions in adopting the concept of socialization, used in many individual sciences, into the realm of pedagogy based on reflective critics on the premises of the concept which are substantial social conditions influencing on human being as individuals and changes in human being. For this purpose, the development process of the concept of socialization are reviewed historically.
