The Use of Cognitive Interview Techniques among Interviewers and Interviewees of Differing Cultures

  This article examines the evaluative research associated with Cognitive Interview (CI) techniques when used with victims and witnesses of criminal events. Issues associated with perception, memory, and recall will be discussed to illustrate how CI techniques aid in improving testimonial evidence that is obtained. Specific techniques used in CI interviewing are discussed in an effort to demonstrate those aspects that are more effective than others. Additional focus on the effective use of CI with diverse multicultural and multilingual groups is provided. Suggestions for tailoring and refining CI techniques to enhance effectiveness among various cultural and linguistic groups in the United States are considered.
