Baeg"un was one of the famous Buddhist masters in late Goreyo Dynasty. He stimulated the Korean Buddhism on the downgrade with his unique Seon and marvelous learning, but could not draw attention under Taego and Naong"s influence. "Analects of Baeg"un" written by Seokchon, his disciple was the only record about him.
His life was calmness itself but was not weak-willed. He knew the way not to concede without losing modesty. Unfortunately there was no follower who succeeded his "absence of the worldly desires" theory.
Baeg"un refused to settle down in bigoted schools. He also denied the formulism that he received the mantle of Linji.
All three monks, which were Baeg"un, Taego and Naong, learned the Linji. It was a new study different from the traditional nine mountain schools.
The ideological flow became the source of strength for Buddhism to remain in existence through 500 years of Chosun Dynasty.
Now the Korean Buddhism"s uniqueness must be analyzed on the current conditions and put into practical application.
