It is a difficult task chasing Korean"s Buddhist monks to examine their activity in China. Under the circumstance that historical materials for the search are not abundant, the finding can only rely on a few records on several history books.
Even if there are materials showing what and where the monks seeked, it is still hard to be proceeded to find out the temples in present China.
Discovering the temples does not mean only finding the monks staying place but also getting to know what they did in China and Korean Buddhism"s traits.
The research of the each monks" activity and the temple shows that they travelled all over China and what they did were interesting. Some conspicious traits are found on the study of the sites the monks had been.
First of all, there were some temples where the monks stayed for study. These were based on the popular ideology at that time irrespective of Zen or Non-Zen.
Some other temples were used for religious worship. For example, Mt. Odae, Bota Island or the places where the famous masters like Hui-neng(慧能), Ma-tsu Tao-I(馬祖道一) entered Nirvana or played active parts.
The temples named as Bup-Hwa-Won(赤山法華院), Shilla-Won(新羅院), Shilla-Sa(新羅寺) or Koryo-Sa(高麗寺) were used for Korean Buddhism to spread to China. Following the purpose, they were built all over the country.
Then there were the temples where Korean monks propagated Dharma. They aggressively acted on the diffusion centering these temples. Each temple related to a typical master, for example, Si-sia-Si(棲霞寺) related to She-Shan(攝山) Seng-lang(僧朗), Si-ming-si(西明寺) related Won-chk(圓測), Da-sheng-ci-si(大聖慈寺) related to 무상. These were the temples where Korean Buddhism upgraded its profile in the middle of Chinese Buddhism.
Korean monks" traces in China have been researched through the regions and the temples where they had sought knowledge.
