As the Sumeru mountain is a central axis of the Buddhism cosmology, it can be regarded to fall under the religious cosmos mountain. And based on such an outlook on the world, diversified ideas in the Buddhism from the Agama part to the Mahayana Buddhism and the Esoteric Buddhism have been developed. The Sumeru mountain cosmology, furthermore, has fulfilled a role of the fiducial line in the Buddhism culture as seen in the overall construction system such as the temple arrangement even to this day. This fact represents that the Sumeru mountain, as the cosmos mountain, is a target of the religious spiritual boundary as well as a place where the sufficient significance of existence and life force can be secured.
However, a movement which aims to place the Sumeru mountain in the same light of the Kailas mountain, an actual object in this world, is emerging recently. The probability that the cognitive confusion regarding the Sumeru mountain may act as a critical risk factor in the Buddhism identity involves the inevitability of accurate review on this opinion.
In this consideration, it is intended to arrange the religious indisputability of the Sumeru mountain and the related classical records regarding the Sumeru mountain theory, and based on this result, to clearly examine the relationship between the Sumeru mountain and the Kailas mountain. And, through such a process, it is intended to precedentedly arrange this opinion that the Sumeru mountain is regarded as the Kailas mountain, and under this arrangement, to contemplate the point that the Kailas mountain in the Buddhism cosmology is not the Sumeru mountain but the Gandha-m?dana mountain.
Through this consideration, we will obtain the clear answer that the Kailas mountain must never be the Sumeru mountain.
