&nbsp;&nbsp;This paper concerns about the structural characteristics and meaning of folk ballads about the relation of wife and concubine. Folk ballads about the relation of wife and concubine consists of three types. (1) The wife who visit a concubine&quot;s house and come back home (2) The wife who visit a concubine&quot;s house and suicide (3) The wife who visit a concubine&quot;s house and get the news about a concubine&quot;s death.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;The structure of folk ballads about the relation of wife and concubine can be classified with three sub-types： the first is the mixed type, the second is the type of demand frustration, and the last is the type of desire completion. Most of folk ballads about the relation of wife and concubine belong to the mixed type. They are closed with the open ending, meanwhile only the type "The wife who visit a concubine&quot;s house and get the news about a concubine&quot;s death" is closed with the happy ending. This means that it is not easy for the wife to get her husband&quot;s love in the traditional society. This shows the reality of life and a wife&quot;s spiritlessness confronting with the reality in the traditional society.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;People who create and transmit folk ballads about the relation of wife and concubine express their consciousness through them as follows;<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;(1) The awareness of distance of justification and reality<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;(2) The criticism about the concubinage<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;(3) The self-respect as a wife.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;Folk ballads about the relation of wife and concubine are means to reveal and communicate their oppressed thoughts for the common women. It is the literature that figured the concubinage as a social problem in the viewpoint of wives in the traditional society. It shows the picture of very independent and subjective women. It gives many suggestions？how the good family and society is in the contemporary society, how the good relation of men and women in the family is.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;Moreover, Folk ballads about the relation of wife and concubine is composed of a dramatic narrative story and contains the frankness in women&quot;s consciousness.
