The purpose of this paper is to investigate the co-occurrence restrictions between verbs and adverbials from a pedagogical perspective. Adverbials are heterogeneous morphologically and syntactically. They are used as adjunct (optional elements) and complement (obligatory elements) in a sentence. However, most grammar books for EFL learners focus on the function of adjunct. This tendency may lead English teachers and learners to misunderstand the properties of adverbials and misuse them. Thus, this paper deals with the syntactic and semantic characteristics of adverbials in relation to verbs, centered on the most typical adverbials with high frequency, adverb (phrases) and preposition(al phrases). First, it will discuss the cases in which adverbials are used as obligatory elements. Second, it will consider the properties of the relevant sentence patterns. Third, it will further consider the co-occurrence restrictions between verbs and adverbials in terms of meaning, lexical approach, verbal aspect, ergativity etc. As a result, it shows that we need to consider the interconnection of grammar with meaning and the relationship between one category and another in describing these complicated linguistic phenomena.
