  오늘날의 미술은 과거와 달리 주제ㆍ기법ㆍ매체의 사용에 있어서 그 범위가 크게 확장되었다. 더불어 표현에 있어서도 표현 이전의 사고의 과정까지 포함하는 넓은 의미의 미술 개념으로 확장되었다. 이전의 미술 형식이 단일화되었던 것과는 달리 조형예술영역은 다원화 양상을 띠고 있으며, 그것은 미술 자체의 내부적 변화에 기인한 것이라기보다는 시대적 흐름에 따른 전반적인 사회ㆍ문화적 변화와 맞물려서 전개된 것이다. 현대미술의 특성인 사고(idea)의 중시, 예술 영역간의 상호교류, 매체 수용의 다양화, 다양한 주제와 기법의 수용 등의 확장된 개념은 교육적으로 시각문화교육, 창의적 인지작용, 통합적 접근으로의 미술교육을 의미하고 있다. 미술교육은 지식 교육으로서 전문성에 초점을 맞추는 것이 아니라 삶의 양식으로서 자기표현의 한 방법으로 인식되어야 한다.
