시각문화교육으로서 디자인 수업의 가능성 연구

A Study on the Possibility of Design Teaching as Visual Culture Education

  미술교육의 새로운 패러다임으로 확산되고 있는 시각문화교육은 미술교육 개념들에 대한 전환을 요구한다. 시각문화교육은 순수미술 중심의 교육 내용구성을 대중문화, 인공물과 전자매체 환경, 물질문화 현상을 포함한 광범위한 시각문화 영역을 수용할 것을 주장한다. 이런 견해는 기존 미술교육의 범주에서 디자인교육의 중요성을 재인식하는 계기가 될 수 있다. 디자인 영역은 미술과 일상생활을 매개하면서도 오늘날의 시각환경을 구성하는 주요한 조건이기 때문이다. 시각문화교육은 학생의 일상생활 경험을 교육의 출발점으로 삼아 학생들에게 시각문화에 대한 비판의식을 형성하고 새로운 시각문화 언어를 창조할 수 있는 역량을 길러주려는 입장을 갖는다. 일상의 환경을 구성하는 디자인 영역은 시각문화교육의 주요한 대상이 된다. 본 연구는 시각문화교육으로서 디자인교육의 가능성을 모색하고 있다. 연구는 시각문화교육의 개념과 디자인교육의 연관성을 밝히고 예비교사들을 대상으로 연구자가 실시한 교육경험과 사례들을 검토하였다. 결론적으로 시각문화교육으로서 디자인교육은 산업자본이 요구했던 생산자를 위한 디자인 능력, 해결책으로서의 디자인 지식의 제공에 치우치기 보다는 현대소비자의 일원으로서 학생들의 합리적 의사소통과 민주적 공동체 형성을 지지하는 비판적 이해로서의 디자인 지식으로 재편됨으로써 시각문화교육의 가능성을 확장한다.

&nbsp;&nbsp;Visual culture education, which begins to be considered as a new paradigm of art education, demands to change the existing concepts of art education. Visual culture education paradigm insists that we should accept a broad field of visual culture such as mass culture, digital media and material cultures within art education curriculum.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;This idea can provide an opportunity to realize the importance of design teaching within art education. Design filed is a very important condition of contemporary visual cultures mediating art and everyday lives. Visual culture education aims to help students build critical thinking on visual cultures and create a new language of visual culture, starting from their own everyday life experiences. Design field surrounding everyday life is essential in this education.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;This research aims to explore the possibility of design teaching as a part of visual culture education. I will clarify the connection between visual culture education and design teaching and illustrate the examples of education working with design teachers. In conclusion, design teaching should be rethought as a design knowledge for critical understanding which supports rational communication and democratic community of the modern consumers rather than as designing skills for industrial productions and design knowledge for problem solving.
