The study examined the perceptions of Korean university students about the effects of studying abroad. In order to assess the perceived effects of studying abroad, the study used the survey and interview methods. One hundred and twenty (N=120) students responded to open-ended questions. In addition, closed-ended questions using a Likert scale were included to validate the students" responses. Eight students were interviewed for richer information. The data reveal that the students not only learned English but also came with personal development and growth. Ninety-eight students (81 %) perceived that their study-abroad experience helped them improve their language skills and contributed positively to their learning. The effect of studying abroad on personal development is also noticeable among the students. The students felt that they had more self-confidence in their abilities than they did before studying abroad. The students" perceptions about the effects of studying abroad have important pedagogical and programmatic implications. In particular, the Korean university students" English learning experiences during study abroad prompt the evaluation of current classroom practices in terms of the extent to which students have opportunities to use English in authentic and meaningful contexts.
