Family Factors Related to Adolescents` Suicidal Ideation : Mediating Effects of Self-esteem and Depression

This study on adolescents` suicidal ideation examined family factors associated with adolescents` suicidal ideation. Paths to adolescents` suicidal ideation were researched with family factors found to have influences on adolescents` suicidal ideation the mediating effects of self-esteem and depression. Family factors included socio-economic status of family, child abuse victimization, domestic violence witness experience, perception of family support deficit, and parents` indifference.<BR> 2,088 high school students were asked to complete self-administering questionnaires on family factors and adolescents` suicidal ideation. Data were analyzed with frequencies, t-test, ANOVA with Scheffe ad-hoc test, correlation, multiple regression analysis using SPSS 12.0 program and AMOS 5.0 program.<BR> Study results were ; Self-esteem and depression were proved to have significant mediating effect. Child abuse victimization and perception of family support deficit were most important variables which influenced adolescents’ suicidal ideation. Therefore, adolescents" suicidal prevention efforts should pay attention to adolescents" self-esteem, depression, experience of child abuse, and perception of family support deficit. These results reinforce importance of understanding adolescents` suicidal ideation with family factors.
