In the world of Darwin"s evolution, human is only a kind of animal that competes each other in the given circumstances. From Hardy"s earlier novels, he insisted human knowledge was his disease including mental activity. And he foretold his mental knowledge drove his world into destructed state. In his youth, Hardy read Darwin"s theory of evolution avidly, so he accepted Darwin"s doctrine as the standard discipline to measure the principle of cosmos. Hardy portrays the ultimate result of human evolution on the level of mental activity in his last novel, Jude the Obscure. Those monstrous results of mental evolution show up as the bundle of nerve like Sue Bridehead, and the incomprehensible figure like Little Father Time. They represent Darwin"s evolution anticipates the ghostlike situation mixed with the disastrous matter. In the end we cannot find the solution in the human condition raised from the result of theory of evolution.
