다문화교육과 국제이해교육의 비교연구 - 미국사례를 중심으로

A Comparative Study of Multicultural Education and Global Education in the U.S.

&nbsp;&nbsp;‘세계화’와 ‘다문화사회’는 20세기 말부터 우리사회에 커다란 변화를 가져온 개념이다. 따라서 이에 대한 교육적인 대안으로 제안된 것이 ‘국제이해교육’과 ‘다문화교육’이다. 현재 이 두 용어의 관계는 명확하게 정의되지 않아 개념과 교육내용, 범위의 측면에서 일선 교사에게 혼란을 주고 있다. 이 논문은 이 두 개 교육 영역의 차이를 ‘국제이해교육’과 ‘다문화교육’의 발생배경과 발전과정의 비교, 그리고 다문화사회인 미국에서의 두 교육의 개혁사례와 구체적인 수업사례를 통해 비교 분석하였다.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;역사적으로 다른 배경에서 출발하여 그 목적과 교육내용에서도 차이를 보인 ‘국제이해교육’과 ‘다문화교육’은 오랫동안의 반목과 대립관계를 거쳐 왔으며, 최근에 와서는 서로 상호협력의 관계를 모색하고 있다. 특히 미국의 사례비교를 통해 볼 때 서로 다른 동기와 목적을 갖고 출발한 이 두 교육은 주차원의 교육개혁이나 학교현장에서 서로 혼용되어 실시되고 있으며, 학자들도 이 두 교육 분야간의 협력적 관계를 주장하는 사례가 늘고 있다. 국내문제가 국제적 관점에서 접근되고 국제문제가 국내문제에 구체화되는 현실에서, 이러한 두 교육 분야의 상호 협력관계는 그 필요성이 증대되고 있으며, 이러한 상황은 두 교육 분야의 정체성 확립과 상호관계 모색에 있어 방향성을 제시해줄 수 있을 것이다.

&nbsp;&nbsp;Since the end of 20th century, ‘globalization’ and ‘multicultural society’ have made a deep impact on the education in Korea. ‘Global education&quot;, and ‘multicultural education’ were proposed in response to the recent social changes. This study examined the theoretical and practical differences between the two educational fields through the comparisons of their origins and evolutionary processes. Especially examples of educational reform of both educations in the U. S. and educational practices in American schools were compared.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;Historically ‘global education’ and ‘multicultural education’ started with different backgrounds, goals, and contents. Particularly in the U. S., tensions or conflicts had existed between the two fields for a long time. Based on the analysis of American schools, however, there are few differences between the two fields in school practices. Now scholars in both field have begun to make conceptual connections between them and complement each other&quot;s theories and practices. There is a growing need to find commonalities between global education and multicultural education as the countries in the world become more dependent, while these two educational areas are pursuing their unique characteristics.
