  이 연구의 목적은 미국의 학위 완성 프로그램과 한국의 학점은행제를 비교 분석하는 데에 있었다. 이 두 제도는 학점을 축적하는 방식과 운영 절차에 있어서 차이점을 갖고 있지만, 그럼에도 불구하고 공히 이 두 가지 제도의 목적은 빠르게 변화해 가는 정보화 사회에서 요구되어지는 지식과 실천을 바탕으로 학위수여를 제공하는 데에 목적으로 하는 것과 성인들이 대상이라는 공통점을 갖고 운영되고 있다. 이 연구에서 사용된 문헌연구와 이 제도들에 대한 참여자의 수가 급격하게 증가하고 있다. 학위를 받으려는 성인들이 늘어감에 따라 교육기관에서의 역할도 증가되고 있다. 성인학습자들을 위한 프로그램 계획과 원격교육 개발 등은 현재 고등교육 기관에 의해 추진되고 주요 분야들 중 좋은 예들이다. 교수자와 직원들의 훈련, 조직적인 구조, 그리고 재정적 지원 등이 고려되고 있다. 교육계의 리더로서 대학들은 세계화되는 사회의 요구에 민감해야 할 것이다.

  This study attempted to analyze the degree completion program of the United States in comparison with the Credit Bank System in Korea. These two programs have similarities and differences in method to accumulate credits and procedures of operating. However regardless what the differences are, the purpose of both programs are to grant degrees with appropriate knowledge and practice that are needed by fast-paced information age. Literature review used for this study and research studies of lifelong education institutes that are operating the program completely agree that the number of participants of the programs is rapidly growing. As the number grew, many new challenges in higher and adult education came up. Planning program for adult learners and developing distance learning are the examples of major areas considered by higher education institutions at the present. Training faculty and staff, changes in organizational structure, and financial support were to be concerned about. As leaders of education areas, colleges and universities should be sensitive to the needs of globalized society.
