조선 金石學史에서 柳得恭의 위상

The position of Yu Deug-Gong in the Chosun’s epigraphy

  유득공은 역사학자이자 시인이며 문필가였다. 관심의 폭 만큼이나 많은 저술을 남긴 그는 조선후기 학술문화사에서 차지하는 비중이 적지 않다. 필자는 조선의 金石學史를 槪觀하면서 그가 金石學 분야에 남긴 업적에 주목하였다. 특히 조선 금석학의 최고봉으로 여겨져 왔던 秋史 金正喜(1786～1856)의 금석학이 유득공의 그것과 연관되어 있음을 확인하였다. 그러나 지금까지 조선 금석문 연구사에서 유득공은 전혀 언급 되지 않았다. 이 글은 조선 금석학사에서 유득공의 위상을 살펴본 것이다. 이를 위해 먼저 조선 금석학을 연구사를 개관하고 금석학에 관한 유득공의 연구 성과를 정리하였다. 이를 통해 금석문의 釋文을 작성하고 본격적으로 내용을 분석한 첫번째 학자가 유득공임을 확인하였다. 그는 금석학에 관한 전문적인 저술을 남기지는 않았지만 『古芸堂筆記』 곳곳에서 금석학자로서의 면모를 드러냈다. 조선 최고의 금석학자는 추사 김정희이지만 그의 금석학은 혼자의 힘만으로 이루어낸 성과가 아니었다. 수많은 선학들의 연구가 있었기에 가능했던 것이다. 그 중에서도 유득공은 추사 김정희 이전의 금석학자 중 가장 뛰어난 학자였고 추사 김정희의 금석문 연구에 가장 많은 영향을 준 인물이었다. 이제 우리는 ‘추사 김정희의 금석학 연구에 큰 영향을 끼친 금석학자’로서 유득공을 기억해야 한다.

  Yu Deug-Gong was a historian, poet, and writer. He had the wide matter of concern and wrote many works. He held the important position in the history of science and culture especially in epigraphy. The epigraphy of ChuSha Kim Jeong-Hui(秋史 金正喜) was continuous with Yu’s. But No one mentioned Yu’s epigraphy in the previous research. This paper made a general survey of Chosun’s epigraphy and introduced the result of Yu’s epigraphy. Through the general survey, it is revealed that Yu was the first epigraphist who made the translation of a stone and analyzed its contents. Although he did not write the epigraphic works, but there are many epigraphic mentions in GoUnDangPilGi(『古芸堂筆記』). The best epigraphist in Chosun dynasty was Kim Jeong-Hui, but his knowledge was under the previous scholars. Specially Yu Deug-Gong was one of great epigraphist, and affected the ChuSha’s epigraphical research. So, Yu should be remembered as a epigraphist who had great influence of the epigraphy of ChuSha Kim Jeong-Hui.
