Trends and Characteristics of Juvenile Crime: 1966-2005

&nbsp;&nbsp;This study concerned with the trends and the characteristics of juvenile crime in Korean from 1966 to 2005. It described the curves and the component ratio of juvenile crime rates in major crimes-violent crime, sexual violence crime, felony, property crime. And it discussed some arguing themes such as the phenomenon that the average age of youth offenders is becoming lower and lower, the tendency of violence in juvenile crime, the problems of juvenile recidivism, and the crimes of teenage girl’s. The data that this study has analysed were obtained from official crime statistics, “Analytical Report on Crime”, which is published by the Supreme Public Prosecutor’s Office in Korea. The analysis periods are from 1966 to 2005. The age range of Juvenile used in this study are 12 to 19 years old.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;During the last forty years, the juvenile crime in our society have increased quantitatively. In all types of crime the annual rate of juvenile crime has increased, but since 2000 it has decreased. Since 2000 the proportion of violent crime in youth crime have diminished, but in case of young youth and teen’s girl, the proportion of violent crime and the rate of violent crime have increased. During the last three decades about 90 percentage of juvenile property crime are theft, but recently fraud have increased. As automobiles have increased, youth traffic-related crime have become growing geometrically.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;There are a phenomena which the average age of youth offender was lower and lower. The tendency of lower-aging in juvenile crime has processed form in gear with increasement of 14-15 years old’s crime and decrease of 18-19 years old’s crime. The recidivism of juvenile offenders has increased step by step. In 2005 one to third of youth offenders has a criminal career. Although the speed is very slow, the girl’s crime goes on increasing.
