The Development of Korean Shipping Industry and the Roles of Government

  Korean Economy has experienced high growth rates of economic growth by adopting the outward-looking strategy since 1960"s. Through the expansion of foreign trade, the volume of international trade has increased very rapidly. Korean Shipping industry also has developed very speedily due to the increased trade volume. This study shows that Korean Shipping Industry has been supported by many kinds of Korean government policies. Similar to the Korean Economy, Korean Shipping Industry"s high growth is closely related to the government Intervention. But after 1980"s, with the tendency of the globalization in international shipping industry, Korean Government has discarded many restrictive policies to protect domestic shipping industry. Korean Shipping Industry will be expected to face many difficulties in the future. In this era of cutthroat competition, Korean Shipping Industry has to find out the best ways to enhance its competitiveness. Korean Government also will search for the appropriate policies which are suitable for the period of the globalization and free trade.
