This study is to understand the mechanism of honor killing through the Turkish novel, To Crush the Serpent. This novel is written by Ya?ar Kemal. To Crush the Serpent is the story of a little boy, Hasan, who is being subjected to pressure and suggestion both from his father"s family and a whole village to kill his mother. The action takes place on the plain of Anavarza and in the foothills of the Taurus mountains. Abbas is a lover of his mother and killed his father. Esme, his mother is a young woman of renowned beauty. Her husband"s mother and brothers keep threatening her. She must leave the village with the scene of her shame or they kill her sooner or later. But Esme refuses to go without her son. The boy loves his mother, but gradually a sense of shame seeps into him. People around him expects him to kill his mother and avenge his father. Finally Hasan killed his mother and story came to end.
Hasan killed his mother because of his imperfection and to camouflage himself as the Whole. This is the logic of honor killing. Logic of honor killing originates from the logic of majority and male thought. It is not because of independent thinking, but, on the contrary, is dependent upon organized and systematized thought. In case of Halil"s family, they project the problem on Esme and make her the scapegoat, because Esme is a foreignness and heterogeneity. Her heterogeneity cannot be tolerated and must be punished. This is a camouflage of perfection.
The fantasy comes from the belief in perfection. Expectation for this logic makes a society less tolerant for the lack of perfection. Therefore, the logic demands that a veil be made to cover it. Honor killing is owing to this fantasy. The only way to counter this type of logic is to accept the imperfection of human beings.
