최근 수년간 미국 학교에서 두드러진 현상은 영어가 제 2 언어인 학생들이 급증했다는 것이다. 영어 학습자의 수가 증가함에 따라 연방 정부와 주 정부들은 학생들의 영어 능력을 측정하는 도구 개발 및 평가에 주력하고 있다. 본 연구는 미국의 한 주에서 실행하고 있는 언어 능력 검사의 구인 타당도를 검증한 연구이다. 이 검사는 읽기, 쓰기, 듣기, 말하기 네 개의 영역을 통해서 영어 능력을 측정하는 도구로 유치원생부터 고등학교 학생들을 네 개의 학년 범주로 나누어서 분류하고 있다. 이 검사의 구인 타당도 검사는 상관관계, 탐색적 요인 분석, 확인적 요인 분석을 통해서 이루어졌다. 첫째, 모든 학년 범주에서 읽기, 쓰기, 듣기, 말하기 영역은 모두 언어 능력 검사의 총점과 높은 상관관계를 보이고 있다. 도구의 내적 구조를 검사하기 위해 실행된 탐색적 요인 분석과 확인적 요인 분석은 이 도구가 단일 차원 모델이라는 것을 입증하였으며 직각회전 방식에 의한 주성분 방법을 통한 탐색적 요인 분석의 결과 유치원생부터 초등학교 2학년까지는 세 가지 요인이 관찰되었고 3학년부터 고등학생까지는 두 가지 요인(학습 언어와 사회적 언어)이 확인되었다. 마지막으로 확인적 요인 분석을 통해서 네 가지 가설적인 모형을 검사하였다. 결과를 살펴보면, 다차원 모형보다 단일 차원의 모형이 언어 능력 검사를 더 잘 설명하는 것으로 나타났다.
To investigate test construct validity of a statewide English Language Proficiency Test (ELPT), intercorrelations, Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA), and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) were conducted on a randomly selected group of 10,000 students in each grade band (Primary, Elementary, Middle School, and High School) totaling 40,000 students. Intercorrelations in the Primary band between the Composite score and Reading and Writing scores were higher than Listening and Speaking. The evidence of unidimensionality was found in all grade bands from both EFA and CFA. The rotated pattern yielded two factors, academic language and social language in the Elementary, Middle School, and High School bands, whereas it generated three factors, Reading/Writing as one factor, Listening, and Speaking in the Primary band. CFA evaluated four hypothetical models; 1) unidimensional model, 2) unidimensional model with error variances correlated, 3) multidimensional model, 4) hierarchical model. The unidimensional model with error variances correlated provided the best fit to the data. Finally, results showed that Reading comprehension and Writing prompt scores became strong indicators as grade bands increase.
