The present study investigated the effects of student-centered speaking practice outside of the classroom using an MP3 player and the Cyworld text bulletin board on speaking ability. 37 students participated in this study. The data from the 37 participants were collected based on pre-and post-narrative speaking tests. The results of the t-test showed statistical significance in terms of total number of words, total number of word types, and TSE measures. The participants also showed positive responses to the questionnaire with regard to the speaking practice of the study. Although listening was not the focus of the study, it was also practiced on the sub-board of the Cyworld text bulletin board. The study suggests that the MP3 player and the text bulletin board could be used for student-centered speaking practice in an EFL context.
