An Educational Study On the Phrases on the Board of the Pillar in Korean Temples

&nbsp;&nbsp;There have been many studies on the theme of Buddhism, such as Buddhist sutra and thoughts, Buddhist institutions, Buddhist arts and musics, and Buddhist clothes and foods. However, there have been few studies on the phrases on the board hanging the pillar of temple buildings.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;This study is intended to translate and analyse the Chinese-character phrases on the board and to extract the educational meaning from them. The findings of this study are as follows;<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;First, the usage of the phrases on the board is to decorate the Buddhist building itself and to give people the knowledge and direction on the mindcultivation and religious life.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;Second, the sources of the phrases on the board are the Buddhist sutra and famous monks&quot; poems, such as Hwaumkyung, Buphwakyung, Keumgangkyung and Hansansi.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;Third, the contents of the phrases on the board are to praise and worship Buddha and Buddhist saints, and to display the free and lofty emotion arising from the beautiful scenery.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;Fourth, the phrases on the board are written by the famous calligraphers and monks.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;Fifth, the colors of the phrases on the board are white and black to make them look better.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;Sixth, the educational role of the phrases on the board is to help students to explore a historic scene, especially traditional temples.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;In conclusion, this study will help to change our viewpoint on cultural assets from the field of sightseeing to that of education.
