&nbsp;&nbsp;한국에서 현직 대통령이 여당의 차기 대선후보 선출과정에 미치는 영향력은 권위주의 시기에는 거의 절대적이었으나, 민주화 과정에서 경선과정이 차츰 제도화되며 대통령의 자의적 영항력은 줄어들었다. 민주화 이후에는 대선후보 선출과정에 후보자에 대한 여론의 지지도가 가장 중요한 변수로 등장했으며, 대통령의 영향력도 대통령 자신의 지지도에 따라 크게 좌우되는 현상이 나타났다.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;김대중 정부에서는 대통령이 선거중립을 표명한 가운데 국민참여경선제가 도입되어 민주적 절차에 의해 노무현 후보가 선출되었고, 소수 실력자의 영향력 보다는 여론이 중요한 변수가 되었다. 노무현 정부에서는 대통령이 선거에 정치적 영향력을 행사하겠다고 공언하다 선관위의 경고를 받았으나 본선이 있기까지 후보들에 대한 자신의 의사를 표명하였다. 하지만 너무 지지율이 낮은 대통령의 한계로 실제로 자신이 선호하는 후보를 지원하는 데는 거의 역할을 못하였다. 이런 사례는 민주화 이후 경선과정이 제도화됨과 더불어, 대통령의 영향력 행사와 후보의 당선에 여론의 지지가 결정적 변수가 되었음을 보여준다.

&nbsp;&nbsp;While the influence of Korean President on the process of selecting the presidential candidate of the government party was absolute at the authoritarian regime, Presidential arbitrary influence has been reduced during the process of democratization, Since the 6th Republic, public support rate for the candidate has become an important factor, and the President could have exercised influence only on the basis of enough support rate.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;After democratization, President Kim Dae-jung declared his neutrality in the process of selecting presidential candidate, and the primary election came into effect, During primary election process, the public support rate was the most influential variable to be the winner, On the contrary, President Roh Moo-hyun tried to exert his influence on selecting the presidential candidate although he had been warned by the National Election Commission not to do so. However, because of his own poor support rate, the President had little influence on the candidate selection process. These cases show the status of institutionalization of democratic electoral system and the influence of public opinion on the election in the process of democratic consolidation in Korea.
