Word Order Paradox and PF effects of Traces

The low adverb completely must be a sister of vP, but it precedes the auxiliary verb do in a vP-elided construction. The purpose of this squib is to provide a principled account for the word order paradox raised by the low adverb completely. I propose that the word order paradox arises from the PF effects of a trace, which in tum follows from the fact that the trace is a zero affix. This paper argues that the proposal sheds light, not only on the word order paradox, but also on puzzles like "Why do some non-intervening traces display intervention effects?" and "Why do some intervening traces show no intervention effects?"
