A Study on the Implication of the IB Diploma Program for High Schools" Elective Curricula in Korea

  이 연구는 최근 국내외에는 많은 사람들의 관심을 받고 있는 고등학교 국제졸업자격제도인 IB Diploma 교육과정이 우리나라 고등학교 선택중심 교육과정의 편성과 운영에 주는 시사점을 탐색하기 위한 것이다. IB Diploma 교육과정의 우수성으로 인하여 IB 교육과정을 성공적으로 이수한 학생들은 세계 많은 나라의 대학 입학 자격을 취득할 수 있을 뿐만 아니라 대학 진학 후 대학 학점으로 인정받을 수 있다. 이 연구에서는 첫째, IB Diploma 교육과정의 주요 특징을 분석한 후, 우리나라 고등학교 선택중심 교육과정의 편성 및 운영에 주는 시사점을 탐색하였다. 둘째, 2007년 개정 선택중심 교육과정의 주요 특징을 분석한 후, 단위학교 교육과정의 편성과 운영의 자율성을 확대시켜 줄 수 있는 교육과정 지침을 분석하였다. 셋째, 우리나라 고등학교에서 IB Diploma 교육과정의 주요 특징을 반영하는 선택중심 교육과정의 운영가능성을 탐색하였다.

&nbsp;&nbsp;This study is to explore implications of the IB Diploma Program for high schools&quot; elective curricula in Korea. The IB Diploma Program was originally developed by IBO in order to provide relevant education for the children of international workers. Because of high quality of it, students who finish the IB Diploma program successfully could not only get admission to prestigious universities across the world, but also get college credit for the courses they took in the program. For the reason, some special-purpose high schools in Korea are examining a possibility of introducing the IB Diploma Program into their schools. In this study, the researcher did three things. First, the researcher tried to find out characteristics of the IB Diploma Program, and draw some implications for High Schools&quot; elective curricula. Second, after analyzing the National Curriculum 2007 in comparison with the former curriculum, called 7th National Curriculum, the researcher explicated some curricular guidelines for the enhancement of school-based curriculum management. Third, the researcher developed a school curriculum framework in order to show whether IB Diploma Program-type Elective Curricula can be implemented.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;In the study, the researcher found out that IB Diploma Program-type Elective Curricula in Korean High Schools can be implemented under the new National Curriculum, whereas it could not be implemented in the 7th National Curriculum. Many restricted national curricular guidelines have been changed into more loosened ones with the new National Curriculum. Four changes are remarkable: First, unnecessary demarcation between general elective subjects and advanced elective subjects is abolished; Second, schools have more autonomy in increasing/decreasing the unit of elective subjects; Third, schools can open special subjects for their students, which could not be opened in general academic high schools under the 7th National Curriculum; Fourth, students should take at least one subject in respective subject groups such as PE/Sports and Arts. With such changes, Korean general high schools can implement the IB Diploma Program-type elective curricula with the new National Curriculum.
