Old-type printed clasic novel Byengin-yangyo(丙寅洋擾) is a historical heroic novel dealing with life-story of General Han Seong-Geun(韓聖根, 1833~1905), who was active in a Korean-France War(丙寅洋擾). Han Seong-Geun earned fame as a general who defeated French troops on which had attacked GangWha island(江華島) in 1866. This work was published as an old-type printed book by DeokHeung-SeoRim(德興書林) in 1928, but did not become known to academic circles until now.<BR> When it is considered that there are little literary works about Byengin-yangyo(丙寅洋擾), this work is significant because of dealing with same historical event. Though fictitious figuration to show general Han"s career as a hero and a politician takes the lead in narrating, we can sense attitude of historical understanding about Byengin-yangyo. Nevertheless, writer has such a lack of correct perception of history that his interest focused on not showing historical truth seriously, but telling hero"s individual physical courage and a heroic deed subjectively. When we compare Byeonginyangyo with other works, that is, Hanyangga(漢陽歌) and Byeonginyangnanrok(丙寅洋亂錄) dealing with Byeongin-ysngyo, we can make sure that two works treat main character Han Seong-Geun in another way like an exaggerated narration and non-realistic expression. That is one of common character which is discovered among old-type printed books in 1920"s. But, we need to appreciate Byeonginyangyo positively in a point of view that this work shows us literary attitude of historical understanding for Byeongin-yangyo and provides us with an unknown whole life of Han Seong-Geun.
