A study on Schemes Debate Lesson Using Newspapers

&nbsp;&nbsp;The Purpose of this study is to find 7th Korean curriculum was set up "Language" as the main body and the final goal of the curriculum is to improve learner&quot;s creativity using Korean. &quot;Language as the main body&quot; means that Korean education is not &quot;teaching about language itself&quot; but &quot;teaching about using language as a tool to understand rules and principal and to solve problem while using the language&quot;. Therefore, the Korean teachers should make the students had ability and attitude about their language to use correctly, interpretively, critically, and creatively by their own needs and purposes. In other words, learners should be helped to understand, transfer, record, report, reflect, evaluate, and persuade the information they are given so that they can understand and accept their cultural environment from multiple perspectives. Therefore, at this time, &quot;accept&quot; means that the students does not just simply accept the information but they interchange their thoughts each other, find consensus through active critical thinking process, and then accept it.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;We are living in the information society. it means everything including&nbsp;&nbsp;politics, economics, society, and culture in the society is changing dramatically. Therefore, people in this society need the ability to classify, criticize, and choose the pouring information to fit in. To improve the ability, education should be changed as well. 7th curriculum suggest students centered education and learning process centered education to educate the students with individual characters, creativity, and enterprising spirits, while the teachers still think textbook is the most important teaching material and it is all should be taught. However, it is hard to educate the students to adjust to this dramatically changing and diverse society with old textbooks. From this point of view, many scholars and administrators are emphasizing the importance of teaching essay writing to educate people who will confront various problem situations and find the way out actively in the global and information society.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;Discussion with newspaper will be a good example of teaching method and learning resources not only to improve student&quot;s critical thinking but also to meet the needs of this society discussed above. Newspaper is great learning material as &quot;living textbook&quot; that help the students think from the multiple perspectives as well as maintain their learning interest. Not like textbook included only abstract and general concepts, newspaper shows active and live reality in our real world. Students can see our diverse world in the newspaper, discuss what is good or bad, and, finally, they can improve their critical thinking skill and build their sound sense of values.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;In addition, discussion is essential for implementing students centered education in the class these days. It has been used one of basic teaching methods in the class for a long time, but, in reality, discussion is hard to implement in the class because the teacher cannot expect where the discussion goes and, therefore, can easily lose control. The reasons are as follows: First, discussion is not natural but intentional process needed to be trained. Second, nobody can expect the versatile of discussion. Third, there are lack of the discussion programs to be used in the school environment. Finally, it is hard to find the adequate topics for the discussion in the classroom.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;Currently, there are teachers who are interested in NIE (Newspaper in Education) - utilizing the newspaper as a teaching and learning material - and trying to apply it to their classroom activities. However, the concrete research about NIE for the discussion class has not been existed. There are only few research about NIE in Korean class (Cho, 2006; Kim, 2006; Park; 2005, Lee, 2002).<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;Therefore, the purpose of
