초등 영어 교재의 명사 어휘 조사 분석

Surveys and analyses of the vocabulary of nouns in the elementary school English coursebooks

  This paper has two aims. One is to analyze the vocabulary of nouns included in the elementary school English coursebooks(i.e. textbooks and teacher"s guides). Here the focus is first on the number of the nouns which are classified in terms of 8 categories and 22 subcatagories of topics, and then on the frequency of those which are introduced across the coursebooks. Some problems are also discussed of introducing new noun words to third graders first in spoken form and then presenting them to fourth or fifth graders too late in written form at the class. The other is to survey third to sixth graders" familiarity with the vocabulary of nouns in textbooks and teacher"s guides. Here some differences are discussed between the graders" familiarity with the nouns of textbooks which are introduced in spoken and written form at the class, and their familiarity with those of teacher"s guides which are presented only in spoken form. In addition, this paper discusses some reasons why the graders" familiarity with the nouns is relatively either higher or lower, in terms of learners" language needs and teachers" roles for them in the classroom. And finally, some strategies are proposed for encouraging students to familiarize themselves with and make the most of noun words which are necessary to motivate their real language use in the classroom.
