The Tower of Babel: Imperial Constructive and Deconstructive Intentions

  이 글은 히브리 성서의 바벨탑 이야기를 통하여 모던과 포스트모던 건축에 나타난 타자를 억압하는 제국주의적 성향을 비판하고, 동시에 서양철학의 근간을 이루는 “구축성,” 혹은 “주관적 관념론”을 비판하려는 의도에서 기획되었다. 성서의 바벨탑 이야기는 인간들의 교만, 나아가 제국주의적 성향과 지나친 주관성이 만든 서구의 “독점 자본주의”를 비판할 수 있는 종교적인 고전 중의 하나라고 할 수 있다. 사실 서구 철학의 근간인 타자를 철저히 배격하며 자신의 주관적인 세계를 구축하려는 의지는 현재 포스트모던 철학자들에 의해서 비판받고 있다. 이러한 흐름의 초석이 바로 건축에서부터 시작되었는데, 근대건축이론들, 즉 영속성, 부동성, 구축성과 같은 근대건축 이론은 근대 서구 지성계의 관념과 정확히 일치하고 있다. 중요한 것은 포스트모던 건축의 이념 자체도 모더니즘의 영속성이나 부동성, 구축성이라는 한계를 벗어나지 못했다는 것이다. 따라서 오랜 세월동안 서구철학자와 신학자들이 바벨탑을 인간의 죄에 대한 신의 심판으로만 이해하여 온 것을 넘어서 이 글은 바벨탑 이야기를 ‘타자를 향해 열린 문’이라는 인문학적이고 미학적인 메타포로 새로운 (이념/현실)의 건물을 짓도록 허용하는 신의 계획임을 주장하고자 한다. 곧 바벨탑 이야기는 모더니즘과 포스트모더니즘의 건축에 있어서 그 제국성을 넘어 신의 ‘타자를 향한 개방적인 해체의 의도’를 말하고 있음을 주장하고자 한다.

  "This article discusses two premises. The first is to criticize the imperialistic tendency of the modem and the post-modem architectures. The second is to criticize the subjective idealism of the Western philosophy. Babelrisws story in the Hebrew Bible represents one of the classics on the critics of the monopolistic capitalism of the Western society. The post-modem philosophers, in fact, have debated against the discourse of subject or the matter of centralization. However, the post-modem architectures do not go beyond the modem philosophers. In other words, buildings of the post-modem architectures are still used by the monopolistic capitalism Beyond the limitation of both modem and post-modem architectures, Babel"s story might provide an alternative philosophy or architectures that is being open toward the others.
