Along with clothing that led the popular fashion, hairstyles also represented trends and situations of different times with connections to the Western fashion. The development of Korean beauty & cosmetic industry has been driven by national sentiment, representation of class and position, and environmental factors. It has witnessed a dramatic advancement in recent five decades.
Observing changes and characteristics of hairstyles from the mid 80s to date resulted in a conclusion that hairstyle not only serves as a shield to protect the body, but also as a means to manifest ones emotions, values, and thoughts, and that the changes and characteristics of hairstyle always model on the past to create and revive more modern image that reflects social and cultural transformations.
There is a challenge of harmonizing the beauty of hairstyle itself with creativity of the designer and approaching hairstyle in the way as with art, music, architecture to render hairstyle an art that satisfies aesthetic and functional needs. Hair designers will have to be equipped with expertise, techniques, and creativity to meet the needs of customers with varied and tailored approaches. For whats Korean to pass for Oriental and global., hair designers should strive to hone their skills to emerge as genuine professionals that proactively accept and respond to changes.
