Diabetes mellitus(DM) is a pathologic condition arising from decreased secrtion of insulin or deficient insulin activity which leads to hyperglycemia. The prevalence of DM in Korea has been dramatically risen in recent years. Hyperglycemia inevitably induces peripheral neuropathy and abnormal microvasculature, which may distort the function of nearly every internal organ. Diabetic foot which can be defined as a ulcerative lesion found in foot of patient with DM is one of chronic severe complications in DM.
This study was related to foot reflexoloy and vein massage in patients with diabete mellitus. The purpose of this study is to identify the change of the diabetic patients applying the foot reflexology and vein massage. Data was collected with deep interviewing the selected three patients; case 1 is DM with hyperlipidemia, case 2 DM with hypertension, case 3 DM with chronic hepatitis during the period of therapy. The study period was different due to individual appointment by patient.
The results were as follows:
1. The case was selected arbitrarily based on diabetic sickness for over 5 years with 250mg/dl at 2 hours after meal and HbA1c 7% and more. Especially case 1 was complicated with hyperglycemia, case 2 with hypertension, and case 3 with chronic hepatitis.
2. No significant decrease in blood sugar level was noted after intervention of the foot reflexology and vein massage, nevertheless, they have positively responded toward better health conditions.
3. There were all changing patterns of thermographic findings. They were shown that thermal changes appear on the whole body including trunk and legs after the intervention of reflexology and vein massage.
4. They have responded to be getting better their emotional and mental conditions, especially comfort and stablility.
5. During the therapy, compliance was getting better with close relationship and affection each other.
6. There was no resistance without any complaints. They want to recommend this therapy to other patients.
As shown in these results, the foot reflexology and vein massage leads the diabetic patients to stablize their emotional and mental conditions without any complaints. Therefore, this program will be a helpful in the diabetic patients as a tertiary prevention. It is strongly recommend that this program will need further development of self-care program as a alternative therapy with combination of traditional control tools, such as diet control, exercise, and medication.
