Since 1990s, hairstyles of Korean men are affected by characteristics of neo-hippies. Among young and active men, haircut with the scissors instead of the clipper and permanent wave with coloring have long been major preferences up to date. Unique and brilliant hairstyles of professional soccer players home and abroad are accepted by the public without reluctance. Individuals penchant for certain hairstyle is presented as diversity as a part of life, and its importance is increasingly growing.
In a relatively short time period since the 1990s, male college students have shown most rapid, varied and daring attempts in new hairstyles. This study has been confined to such male college students to grasp their inner and outer desires by observing their hairstyles, habits and needs. In conclusion,
First, the most preferred haircut is cutting with scissors only without using the clipper (41.1%), followed by long layered hairstyle(30.2%).
Secondly, for permanent wave, wind-like setting perm is the most preferred(41.1%), followed by the similar wind-like style but more clear and pronounced stuck out hairstyle (28.7%).
Thirdly, preference for hair coloring is characterized by natural color as natural brown, natural goldish blue black, partial bleaching, and whole bleaching rather than splendid color.
Fourthly, relative order of preference between haircut, permanent wave, and coloring is haircut (60.5%), coloring (24.8%), and permanent wave(14.7%). It is witnessed that male college students are most interested in haircut design.
Male college students have broken away from short, clean and neat image to pursue more personalized cutting style, and natural hairstyle rather than unconventional and exceptional image.
In terms of importance and impact of hairstyle of male college students in their lives, they place unexpectedly high importance on appearance and personality presentation. And for hairstyling product they currently use, they are found to value quality more than price. They tend to be not influenced by recommendations or persistence by others, but rather they have firm hairstyle preference, and are satisfied only after enough consultation with designer based on their requirements. They do not want to have similar hairstyle as others and avoid blindly following hairstyles of celebrities in TV or fashion trends. They are willing to spend more to cover individual defects, repair damaged hair and highlight merits rather than unconditionally go for fashion trends. Most male college students seek after healthy and active image by making changes in their hairstyles. And as observed in their preferences in haircutting, perming, and coloring, they go after more balanced intelligent, personalized, and active style.
This paper would help hair designers to make incessant efforts to meet rapidly changing needs in hairstyles of male college students.
