Vision may play major role within the information supplied from the surrounding world to the brain. Especially, color may have power to attract people’s mind. Humans prefer cooler color when it is hot, and warmer color when it is cold. There are some papers dealing with the relationship between thermal sensation and color perception.
Our question is what physiological rule may be responsible for the color preference? The aim of the study is to understand the physiological mechanisms underlying the color preference. Our hypothesis is that how a load error between the core temperature and its set-point is may essentially determine the behavior selecting the preferred color. Obeying this hypothesis, we studied the effects of menstrual cycle, and bright light exposure during the daytime on color preference. Color preference could be interpreted in terms of human physiology. As discussed previously, the physiological motivation for color preference might be determined by the relationship between core temperature and its set point. The finding that women preferred warmer colors in the luteal phase than in the follicular phase suggests that the deviation of core temperature from its set point might have been greater in the luteal phase than in the follicular phase. It is presumed that such greater deviation of the core temperature from its set point might have made the subjects to choose warmer colors in the luteal phase.
In the case of two different light intensities during the daytime, the set point was lower in the set point was lower in the bright than in the dim. The actual core temperature did not differ during the color preference test. Therefore, the subjects had to approach their actual core temperature to reduced set point. Therefore, the cooler color was preferred after the bright.
Our present experiment disclosed that the preferred cloth color could be determined by the relationship between the internal temperature and its set point. In other words, color preference may depend on "milieu interieur". It should be emphasized that the alliesthesia was observed also in the realm of visual sensation.
