Approaches to Teaching Modern English and American Poetry

  I intend this paper not as debating over the content or meaning of literary works, but rather as exploring practical teaching processes or skills that might be applied to the real poetry class. Shifting the goal of modern English and American poetry class from covering every modern English and American poets and all aspects of modern poetry toward leading students to learn a set of critical reading skills by participating some class activities, I do not solely depend on ubiquitous teaching method of lecturing, but rather use some approaches to make students involve in class discussions, diverse activities, group presentations, and writing poems as a report, and so on. The above mentioned activities have tremendous danger to lead the class nowhere, but have also definite advantages: students learn some critical reading skills to apply them to any literary works as well as to the world of culture and language that they encounter throughout their lifetime.
