A study of collaborative exploration of teaching English in Korean universities

  The purpose of this study is to investigate the teacher collaboration as a way of teacher development in the university level. A current theme in teacher education is to view teacher collaboration as an ongoing process and an important factor to encourage teacher development. Hence, teacher collaboration is becoming an essential ingredient in successful schools. Considering the important role of part-time lecturers in Korean universities, it is worth to examine how they involve teacher collaboration for their professionalism and their better teaching. The two research questions in this study were: 1) what kind of teacher collaboration experiences do lecturers have? and, 2) what do lecturers think of teacher collaboration. The study was conducted through quantitative and qualitative methods. Within this research framework, it was found that part-time lecturers are working in isolating work conditions, their collaboration is very superficial and their interactions with teacher educators are very limited. Finally, this study calls for increased collaboration among lecturers in universities and suggests some practical ideas for the effective teacher collaboration model.
