This study was carried out to investigate body satisfaction, weight control behavior and nutrition knowledge of high school students in Chungbuk province. Questionnaires were distributed to 300 high school students from August 16th to August 18th, 2005. A total of 200 questionnaires (male 100, female 100) were collected and analyzed for statistics using SAS 8.2 program. Average BMIs of male and female students were 21.5 and 20.4, respectively. Although 60% of males and 53% of females had standard BMI, only 30% and 15% were satisfied with their body weight, respectively. These results demonstrate that females were less satisfied with their body weight than males (p<0.01). The less satisfied students were more concerned about weight in both gender (p<0.001). More than half of females (58%) answered that the purpose of weight control was "for body image" whereas 39% of males did "for health". There was no difference between males and females in nutrition knowledge score. In the relationship among body satisfaction, weight control behavior and nutrition knowledge, the less satisfied group tried to control body weight more frequently (p<0.05) and had lower nutrition knowledge score (p<0.05). Our results suggest that the less satisfied group is at higher risk of unhealthy weight control behavior with uncorrect nutrition knowledge. Therefore, nutrition education for healthy weight control to high school students should be needed.
